Krill Oil and Cancer Prevention

By Emma Gapas, DVM

What is Krill oil and how can it help with cancer prevention?

Krill is a small shrimp-like crustacean found in the waters of the Southern Ocean near Antarctica and in the Northern Pacific, near the Arctic. Oil extracted from Krill is a natural alternative for good health and cancer prevention and can have profound health benefits for your pet. It has 300 times the antioxidant power of vitamins A and E, yet you won’t have to worry about your pet overdosing, due to krill oil’s natural composition.

Krill are considered to be the largest biomass in the world; animals such as whales and penguins feed on it to sustain their health and nutrient needs. It is very versatile and is able to penetrate the skin and brain tissues to provide maximum benefit to virtually every organ and system in the body. It has been demonstrated to clear skin and protect against cancer due to its potent antioxidant activity. It can also be used as a natural anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of pet arthritis, respiratory conditions, kidney disease and heart disease.

The benefits of krill oil are so scientifically sound that even NASA uses a component of it to preserve food. Its components are also approved for use in human baby formula for superior brain development and prevention of sinus infections, back pain and joint conditions.

How do I choose the best Krill oil for my pet?

Not all oils are made the same. Many do not have the natural compounds that prevent degradation and damage to the product. Simply going out and picking oil off the shelf can be a dangerous for your pet. If the oil has gone bad or lacks natural antioxidants, it can harm your pet’s heart and arteries and increase the effects of diabetes.

We recommend choosing products that have been manufactured according to a regulating body’s set criteria (such as FDA “Good Manufacturing Practices”) to ensure there are no toxic products in the oil. Imagine trying to get some good fish oil while at the same time eating mercury, an ingredient linked to insanity and hormonal system damage. Only products manufactured to certain high standards of quality can offer assurance that the products are completely free of toxins such as these.

Recent studies have shown krill oil to be a beneficial enhancement for the health of both humans and pets. However it is important to consult you veterinarian thoroughly before administering krill or any new supplement to your pet, as each animal has their own set of specific needs and conditions.
