There are several recognized tools vets often
recommend to treat separation anxiety, with the goal to stop the
inappropriate behavior and control the pet’s anxiety:
            1.
Change pet / owner interaction.  Such tactics as making the dog independent, ignoring pleas
for attention, and rewarding calmness may work here.
            2.
Use supplements to slow down cognitive dysfunctions.  There is evidence that oils like EPA and DHA can affect
behavior and trainability and actually protect brain structures.  Reducing inflammation with natural antioxidants can also have
an impact on cognition in pets and potentially slow natural and
unnatural effects of the aging process on the brain.
            3.
Change leaving and returning protocols.  You might try ignoring your dog 15-30 minutes before leaving
and reward calmness upon your return.
            4.
Decrease departure anxiety.  Go through your normal departure routine (such as picking up
your keys) without ultimately leaving the house is one example; you
might also try desensitizing your dog by putting in low-anxiety
situations like low noise or low repetitive sounds that may mimic
            something like picking up keys.
            Separation
anxiety need not be a problem that causes stress for your animal and
at the same time destroys your house.  The key is to realize that there are many different angles
one can take simultaneously to stop unwanted behavior and have your
pet act the same way as if you were there.
